Colorado Firm Recalls Burrito Products For Possible Listeria Contamination

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30, 2008 - Home Fresh Sandwich Distributors, Inc., a Denver, Colo., firm, is recalling approximately 172 pounds of burrito products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The burrito products were produced on Dec. 23, 2008, and sold at retail convenience stores in Colorado. Consumers may have purchased these burrito products on Dec. 24 and 25, 2008.

The problem was discovered through FSIS routine microbiological testing. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

St Louis area Sausage recall Listeria

WASHINGTON, Dec. 25, 2008 - T. Piekutowski European Style Sausage, a St. Louis, Mo., firm, is recalling approximately 750 pounds of sausage products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The sausage products were produced on Dec. 18, 2008, and sold at the establishment's retail counter in the St. Louis, Mo. Consumers may have purchased these sausage products on Dec. 18 and 19, 2008.

Cocoa products sold at Big lots and Shopko recalled melamine

G&J Hot Cocoa Stuffer Item . This hot cocoa product was sold in small green and blue boxes with a backer card, candy cane and marshmallows.
G&J His and Hers Hot Cocoa Set Item 120129 This cocoa product was sold with 2 ceramic mugs in a brown box.

No injuries have been reported and only a few samples have, in fact, been found to include melamine. However, DMI is proceeding with this recall in the interest of public health and the safety of American consumers.

The above recalled products were imported into the United States by DMI and distributed nationwide to retailer Big Lots during the weeks of September 22, 2008 and September 29, 2008 and to retailer Shopko during the week of October 10, 2008.

DeNunzio's Sausage Soy Allergy Alert

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2, 2008 - DeNunzio's Sausage, an Elmira, New York establishment, is recalling approximately 36,388 pounds of ready-to-eat Polish Kielbasa sausage products because they may contain an undeclared allergen, soy protein, the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. Soy protein is a known allergen, which is not declared on the label.

STOP and SHOP Recall Butternut squash prepared side dish recall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Quincy, MA -- November 24, 2008 --- Following a recall from its vendor, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has announced it is recalling all butternut squash sides that are packaged with the supermarket chain’s prepared turkey and ham holiday dinners.

The recall applies to all 24-ounce sides of butternut squash packaged in the holiday meals and was issued immediately after Stop & Shop’s vendor, Simmering Soup, Inc. recalled the product because of an undeclared egg allergen and quality concerns. The recall applies only to butternut squash that comes as part of the packaged holiday dinners and not to squash sold in the prepared foods department.

To date, no illnesses have been reported due to the recalled product.

Customers who have already picked up their holiday meals are asked to discard the two containers of squash and return to the store either before or after the holiday, where they will receive a $12 refund to enable them to purchase an alternative side dish of their choice. Customers who have not yet picked up their meals may do so as planned—the squash will be removed, and the price of the meal will be reduced by $12.

Nestle Withdraws Nestle Farinha Lactea Cereal in the United States (November 3)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- November 3, 2008 -- Nestlé is withdrawing Nestlé Farinha Lactea cereal in the United States. Nestlé is taking this action as we have learned that the product may contain residual traces of a pesticide not currently approved for use on wheat in the U.S. While the pesticide is approved for use in Brazil and the noted levels are well below Brazilian standards, it is not used on wheat products in the United States and therefore there is no set standard for its presence in cereal. The pesticide is permitted in the United States on grain crops other than wheat.

Nestlé Farinha Lactea cereal is manufactured in Brazil by Nestlé Brazil and sold primarily in Portuguese language communities in the United States. The withdrawal applies to all sizes, varieties and production codes of the product. No other Nestlé products are affected.

Nestlé USA is assisting with the withdrawal of this product from the U.S. market to ensure the continued quality and safety of Nestlé products. Nestlé has not received any illness reports or consumer complaints.

The company is voluntarily recalling the tofu because of the presence of milk in a product that is labeled as nondairy.

The frozen product, sold in U.S. grocery stores, comes in a retail package labeled as Amy’s Tofu Scramble in a Pocket Sandwich. The code date printed in white on the easy-open zipper end is: 10 H148 A,B,C or D.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — October 27, 2008 — Mars Petcare US today announced a voluntary recall of a limited number of bags of SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled following a positive test result indicating a potential contamination with Salmonella.

This product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners should dispose of product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and return the empty bag to the store where purchased for a full refund.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

The contamination was found in a 12-ounce package of Zeigler chicken and pork wieners marked CI USE BY Nov 26 08. The package also bears the plant number P-9156S inside the USDA mark of inspection. The wieners are manufactured by R.L. Zeigler Co. Inc., Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons with chronic diseases or taking chemotherapy for cancer.

Schwan's Home Service -frozen chicken recall

, Nov. 7, 2008 - Barber Foods Company, a Portland, Maine, establishment, is recalling approximately 41,415 pounds of frozen stuffed chicken products that may contain foreign materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The products were produced on May 17, June 2 and August 4, and were made available for catalog or internet purchase from the Schwan's Home Service, Inc. by consumers nationwide.

The problem was discovered after the Schwan's Home Service, Inc. received consumer complaints of finding pieces of rubber in the product. FSIS has not received any reports of injury at this time. Anyone concerned about an injury from consumption of the products should contact a physician.

Update Salmonella Petfood recall

The tainted dog food has been traced to a Mars Petcare U.S. plant in Everson, PA. On Sept. 12, the company announced a recall of approximately 23,109 tons of dry dog and cat food sold under 105 brand names. The outbreak had also prompted the company to recall its Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula and Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food in August 2007. A third recall of the company’s SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold, which was sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia, was issued late last month.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Minneapolis, Minn., October 31, 2008 – General Mills is voluntarily recalling a single day's production of Progresso Hearty Tomato soup because of a product labeling issue. Product produced on this date may have been mislabeled, and may contain allergens not listed on the ingredient label, specifically egg, milk, and soy.

There have been no reports of allergic reactions or illnesses associated with this product, however, the possibility of unlabeled allergens makes this a Class One recall.

Niagra area ecoli update

E. coli cases linked to a Burlington restaurant are also connected to a widening outbreak in Niagara Region, says a local health official.

The Halton Regional Health Department announced Thursday it is investigating two confirmed and three possible local cases of E. coli.

Four are linked to Johnathan’s Family Restaurant on Fairview Street, which has voluntarily closed, said Halton’s director of health protection services.

Jacobina Biscuits --melamine Recalled

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 29, 2008 -- Everlasting Distributors Inc., Bayonne NJ is initiating a nationwide recall of all their 3.88oz (110gm) packages of Fresh and Crispy Jacobina Biscuits because it may be contaminated with Melamine.

Consumers who have the product which is being recalled should stop using it immediately. If consumers have questions about possible health risks, they should contact their doctor.

Product was distributed nationwide in Asian Grocery stores.

The product comes in 3.88oz (110 gm) blue and red color clear plastic package, labeled “JACOBINA”.

No illnesses associated with this product have been reported to date.

Safe food handling ALERT raw pork warning

SEATTLE -- A ground-breaking investigation by the KOMO Problem Solvers has found toxic, life-threatening Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) bacteria in some pork you might buy at grocery stores.

So the Problem Solvers, along with our network of stations in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and California did our own testing. At stores around the region, we purchased 97 packages, divided between ground pork and pork cutlets. We sent all the samples to IEH Laboratories, a USDA-certified lab in Seattle.

The scientists followed standard testing protocols and found MRSA in three different samples; all were ground pork. The positive samples were from purchases made in Oregon, California and Idaho -- three of the four states where we tested.

"The interesting situation here," said Samadpour, "is that now we have something that you would worry about in terms of wound infections in foods."

Like most other bacteria, MRSA will die if it's thoroughly cooked. But unlike E. coli or salmonella, MRSA causes skin infections, so just touching raw pork that has the bacteria could be a problem, according to both Samadpour and Goldburg.

Nature's Fair Restaurant Plainville NY Salmonella

Plainville’s Natures Fair Restaurant in Cicero, New York is closed until next Friday following a salmonella outbreak in which 20 people, including an employee, fell ill. The outbreak began in mid-August and has continued through October 19. Some of those who fell ill were hospitalized.

While the restaurant is closed, owner Mark Bitz says it will clean the place top to bottom, test their employees, and also review its practices. Onondaga County Health Commissioner Doctor Cynthia Morrow says she is not certain from where the salmonella originated, but noted that, “We do know that a similar strain, not an identical strain, but a similar strain was found in Minnesota turkeys. We believe that it’s most likely associated with the turkeys but we don’t know that yet,” said Morrow. Morrow said that she expects a few more cases. Salmonella is often linked with turkeys, but health officials cannot confirm that turkeys are to blame in this case

Ecoli cases in Evergreen, Col no source ID'd

DENVER -- Eight children, between the ages of 4 and 12, have tested positive for the same Escherichia coli bacteria but officials don't know the connection.

The children live, or have been, in the Evergreen area but don't attend the same school, a health official told 7NEWS Friday morning.

Two of the children remain hospitalized as a result of infections from the potentially deadly bacteria.

State and County health officials are investigating deer or elk droppings, along with other behaviors in the Evergreen area where the children might have all come in contact.

The first infection case involving the O157: H7 strain was reported in July and the last case was reported on Oct. 22, health officials said. That strain of E. coli cause disease by making a toxin called Shiga toxin.

"State and local health officials are investigating possible sources of exposure, including deer and elk droppings, as well as common behaviors, activities, foods and drinks.

"We are doing a comprehensive investigation," said Gayle Miller, an epidemiologist with the Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment. "We don't have a smoking gun. We don't know yet what the source is."

The children, ages 4 to 12, do not attend the same school, but they live or have been in the Evergreen area, Miller said. Six of the cases are in Jefferson County, and two are in adjacent counties. Miller would not identify those counties.

Public health officials are trying to pinpoint the source of a food-borne E. coli outbreak in Niagara.

So far, there are two confirmed and three suspected cases of the potentially serious infection.

Four of the five cases have been linked to food consumed at the Little Red Rooster, a Niagara-on-the-Lake eatery. The restaurant, which is located at 271 Mary St., was voluntarily closed by its owners on Friday.

Dr. Robin Williams, Niagara Region's medical officer of health issued a public advisory Saturday, appealing for anyone with symptoms of E. coli poisoning – such as bloody diarrhea and severe abdominal pain – to come forward in hopes that new information will assist in determining the source.

The nature of incident has prompted public health to broaden its search, including the investigation of other food establishments and distributors, said Glen Hudgin, manager of environmental health.

“The process basically is to find out from the persons who have been ill what their food history is for the last number of days," Hudgin told The Niagara Falls Review, Sunday. "That means that we have in fact gone out to a number of different food premises within the region to look at those facilities and to collect food samples from the items those people would have had in their meals.”

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS) ― County Health Officials tell CBS 2 and KCAL 9 that there have been at least two dozen confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning -- including two hospitalizations -- stemming from the Volunteers of America Central Kitchen in North Hollywood.

Communicable disease doctors have pinpointed the kitchen for the outbreak which has sickened nearly 30 people including teachers and students who eat food prepared from the kitchen.

City of Fulton boil-water advisory extended through today (Wednesday)

The City of Fulton issued a boil water advisory Saturday after bacteria was found in the city’s water supply. The advisory was extended at least through Wednesday.

The low level of bacteria was found in the Sixth Ward during the regularly scheduled flushing of the hydrants.

Under the advisory, residents on the city’s water system are advised not to drink water from the tap. Any tap water used for cooking, drinking, washing dishes, brushing teeth, or making ice should first be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before it is used.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. -- A Lake Stevens restaurant is likely the source of an E. coli illness that sickened 13 Snohomish County residents, said Suzanne Pate of the Snohomish Health District.

Out of 17 total cases, interviews with 13 of them concluded that the Ixtapa restaurant at 303 91St. Ave. NE in Lake Stevens was probably the exposure site, Pate said.

One case has not yet been interviewed, and three other ill people did not eat at the restaurant, Pate said.

The restaurant owner voluntarily closed the restaurant at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after investigators reported their findings. He said he would work with the Snohomish Health District to resolve potential food safety issues, Pate said. more

Fulton Water Works Superintendent John Florek continues to collect water samples around the city today while he waits for the results of samples collected Monday. Florek says he suspects that test results will show that a sample taken from a small Fulton car dealership that tested positive for E. coli bacteria was an isolated incident. If that is confirmed, Florek said that a boil water advisory that has been in place since Saturday could be lifted by Wednesday afternoon.

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Southeast Iowa health officials have confirmed a third case of a virulent type of E. coli in the region.

The latest case involving the bacteria was confirmed Monday by the Des Moines County Health Department. In Lee County last week, health officials confirmed two cases.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says it has not determined the source of the illnesses.

Across the border in Hancock County, Ill., another possible case of E. coli was reported last Wednesday, but remained unconfirmed by state health officials.

Recalled cookies found in Conn.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Cookies tainted with melamine have been found on store shelves in Connecticut, according to the Department of Consumer Protection.

Department commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said that Koala's March cookies, which had been recalled by distributor Lotte USA, were found on store shelves on Friday.

Lotte USA recently issued a recall of the cookies, produced in China, because they may be contaminated with melamine.

Agency inspectors said tests performed by the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station Laboratory found melamine above allowable levels in the food.

E-Coli Surfaces in WI; Tainted Beef Blamed

Frozen ground beef patties produced at a plant in the Waukesha County community of Butler are making people sick from e-coli-related illness. The plant is owned by beef producer Cargill.

The patties have been pulled off Sam's Club store shelves nationwide after four kids in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area became ill from e-coli.

Now, there are three confirmed or suspected cases in Milwaukee County, and at least two more in southern and eastern Wisconsin.

Bevan Baker with the Milwaukee Health Department says their lab has been working the case since last week, before the recall was issued Saturday.

The following recalls have been announced:

_Packages of Kyosai Sengiri Daikon dried radishes due to the presence of undeclared sulfite. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfite run the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product, which is being recalled by JFC International Inc.

Kyosai Sengiri Daikon is sold in 3.5 oz. clear plastic packages with the following UPC Code (0 11152 42327 2) and was distributed nationwide. It comes from China.

No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who have purchased Kyosai Sengiri Daikon are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 323-887-5232.

Nut Allergy Alert Russell Stover Candy

In Specific U.S. Markets, Russell Stover Candies, Inc. Issues Hazelnut Allergy Alert for the 2 7/8 Oz Size Of Private Reserve Assorted Chocolates

The recalled product was distributed in the following states and cities: Texas, California, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee; Southaven, Mississippi; Billings, Montana; Sparks, Nevada; and Madison Heights, Michigan. An investigation determined 29 boxes of this candy may have been purchased by consumers, and up to another 188 boxes may have reached retail store locations. All the retail stores have been contacted to have the suspected product removed from the shelves.

The candy containing the hazelnuts comes in a box with a red lid and gold border. The box is held closed by a gold cord tied in a bow. A label on the bottom right corner of the box identifies it as "Assorted Chocolates, Net Weight 2 7/8 oz." The side of the box is marked "01JUL09 N0349." Only product with the "N0349" lot code is affected.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2008 - A.C.S. Meyners Ltda., a Ponte Verde, Fl., establishment, is recalling approximately 20,460 pounds of frozen beef trim that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The frozen beef trim products were produced on Aug. 19, 2008, and were exported to the United States and then sent to distributors and establishments in New York and Pennsylvania. These products were sent to establishments for further processing and will likely not bear the establishment number “Nicaragua 4” on products available for direct consumer purchase.

Arnold Foods recalls bread over nut allergy concerns

"Arnold Foods Co. Inc. is recalling one of its Brownberry brands of Whole Grains Bread because it may contain nuts, the company said Wednesday.

The Horsham, Pa.-based company issued the warning about its 100 percent Whole Wheat brand, in the 1-pound, 8-ounce size. It may contain almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts.

The product was sold in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

No other Arnold brand or Brownberry brand products are affected."

"We're very leery of the Chinese food safety system," says Tony Corbo, Legislative Representative for Food and Water Watch. "At best it's weak, at worst it's corrupt. It just reeks with corruption." Food and Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer organization that works on food and water safety issues.

DeLauro Raps FDA On Melamine Risk Guidelines

The FDA action brought a strong rebuke from Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Chairwoman of the Agriculture-- Food and Drug Administration subcommittee.

"While other countries throughout the world, including the European Union, are acting to ban melamine-contaminated products from China, the FDA has chosen to establish an acceptable level for melamine in food in an attempt to convince consumers that it is not harmful," she said. "Not only is this is an insult to consumers, but it would appear that the FDA is condoning the intentional contamination of foods."

FDA Detects Melamine Contamination in Flavored Drink

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has increased inspections and product testing efforts in response to the melamine contamination problem which originated in Chinese dairy products. As a result of the FDA's on-going testing program, the agency has detected melamine contamination in Blue Cat Flavor Drinks. The distributor of the product, Tristar Food Wholesale Co. Inc., initiated a recall of several flavors of Blue Cat Flavor Drink, based on the FDA’s findings. The FDA advises the public not to consume this product and recommends that retailers and food service operators remove the product from sale or service.

Other Recalls

On September 26, the FDA issued an alert to consumers that seven Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products were being recalled by the Taiwanese company, King Car Food Industrial Co. Ltd., due to possible contamination with melamine. King Car Food Industrial Co. used a non-dairy creamer manufactured by Shandong Duqing Inc., China, which was found to be contaminated with melamine. The recalled products are:

* Mr. Brown Mandheling Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Arabica Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Blue Mountain Blend Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Caramel Macchiato Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown French Vanilla Instant Coffee (3-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Mandhling Blend instant Coffee (2-in-1)
* Mr. Brown Milk Tea (3-in-1)

The FDA recommends that consumers not consume any of the above Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products. The FDA also recommends that retailers and foodservice operators remove the products from sale or service.

Sunny Maid Corp. Monterey Park, Calif., who is an importer and distributor of Mr. Brown Instant Coffee products, is recalling the products in the United States.

The FDA is working with regulatory agencies in the United States as well as with other countries. The California Department of Public Health and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority reported that its testing of White Rabbit Creamy Candies has shown melamine contamination at high levels. In light of the widespread contamination of milk and milk-based products in China and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority’s finding, the FDA continues to recommend that consumers not eat White Rabbit Creamy Candy and that retailers and foodservice operations remove the product from sale or service.

A recall by QFCO Inc., Burlingame, Calif., of the White Rabbit Creamy Candies, is underway in the United States.

The FDA is closely monitoring these recalls and will continue to perform follow up activities of other recalls that may develop.

To date, the FDA is not aware of any illnesses in the United States stemming from consumption of Blue Cat Flavor Drinks, White Rabbit Creamy Candy, or the Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products.

Individuals who have experienced any health problems after consuming Blue Cat Flavor Drinks, White Rabbit Creamy Candy, or any of the identified Mr. Brown coffee and tea products are advised to contact their health care professional.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing the milk ingredient was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk as an ingredient.
