FRANKLIN, Tenn. — October 27, 2008 — Mars Petcare US today announced a voluntary recall of a limited number of bags of SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled following a positive test result indicating a potential contamination with Salmonella.

This product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners should dispose of product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and return the empty bag to the store where purchased for a full refund.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

The contamination was found in a 12-ounce package of Zeigler chicken and pork wieners marked CI USE BY Nov 26 08. The package also bears the plant number P-9156S inside the USDA mark of inspection. The wieners are manufactured by R.L. Zeigler Co. Inc., Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons with chronic diseases or taking chemotherapy for cancer.

Schwan's Home Service -frozen chicken recall

, Nov. 7, 2008 - Barber Foods Company, a Portland, Maine, establishment, is recalling approximately 41,415 pounds of frozen stuffed chicken products that may contain foreign materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The products were produced on May 17, June 2 and August 4, and were made available for catalog or internet purchase from the Schwan's Home Service, Inc. by consumers nationwide.

The problem was discovered after the Schwan's Home Service, Inc. received consumer complaints of finding pieces of rubber in the product. FSIS has not received any reports of injury at this time. Anyone concerned about an injury from consumption of the products should contact a physician.

Update Salmonella Petfood recall

The tainted dog food has been traced to a Mars Petcare U.S. plant in Everson, PA. On Sept. 12, the company announced a recall of approximately 23,109 tons of dry dog and cat food sold under 105 brand names. The outbreak had also prompted the company to recall its Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula and Krasdale Gravy Dry Dog Food in August 2007. A third recall of the company’s SPECIAL KITTY® Gourmet Blend dry cat food sold, which was sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia, was issued late last month.

Jolly Good Meat Products of Los Angeles CA is recalling approximately 600 pounds of ready-to-eat and raw banger sausage rolls because they may contain eggs, an allergen that is not declared on the label, reports the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Products subject to recall are 8.9-pound cases of ready-to-eat Jolly Good Banger Rolls and 24-pound cases of raw Jolly Good Banger Rolls. Each box bears "Est. # 6216" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Progresso Tomato Soup Recall -allergy alert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Minneapolis, Minn., October 31, 2008 – General Mills is voluntarily recalling a single day's production of Progresso Hearty Tomato soup because of a product labeling issue. Product produced on this date may have been mislabeled, and may contain allergens not listed on the ingredient label, specifically egg, milk, and soy.

There have been no reports of allergic reactions or illnesses associated with this product, however, the possibility of unlabeled allergens makes this a Class One recall.

This voluntary recall includes only 19-ounce Progresso Hearty Tomato soup with the following code date printed on the bottom of the can:

A production error resulted in a limited number of cases of Progresso Light Vegetable and Noodle soup being mislabeled as Progresso Hearty Tomato soup. Mislabeled cans have the code date 19May10 NV VN-3 on the bottom of the can, but are mislabeled as Progresso Hearty Tomato soup.

Niagra area ecoli update

E. coli cases linked to a Burlington restaurant are also connected to a widening outbreak in Niagara Region, says a local health official.

The Halton Regional Health Department announced Thursday it is investigating two confirmed and three possible local cases of E. coli.

Four are linked to Johnathan’s Family Restaurant on Fairview Street, which has voluntarily closed, said Halton’s director of health protection services.
